Large loan or grant for 60-ish year old woman going to law school – with bad credit. Anything available? She is a friend of mine and would need to get the money quickly. Has been accepted to law school, but probably needs somewhere between 10 and 20 thousand dollars to move to Florida and go to law school there. I was wondering if there might be some money out there for older people or older women going back to school… something like that? Any suggestions? Thanks!
Thank you for your answer, Brother Otter. I appreciate it, but maybe I haven’t emphasized sufficiently the fact that she has bad credit — VERY BAD credit.
And actually she has already gotten money from the school, but nearly what she will need to make the transition.

Sorry – above should say “NOT nearly enough.”
Also, to be more specific, she has a recent bankruptcy.

Your friend should start out by completing the FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
Depending on where she’ll be enrolling, there may be grants for non-traditional students.
The relocation expenses will have to come out of her own pocket though part of that can be paid out of whatever funding she gets. And, at 60, she very likely has been doing business at a bank for a long time so likely can get a line of credit opened that can front end this endeavor.

Very Bad Credit will likely be an issue. There’s really no way around it. Again, the most affordable solutions will be had through the Financial Aid office. Any other lenders are going to charge more interest than she can afford.
And, on top of it, she’s going to have a hard time getting a loan anyway at 60 years old. Many lenders will be anxious about whether she’ll be productively employed long enough to repay a loan.

Where can I find governmental loans/grants for women, families, and the unemployed?Everywhere I searched on the internet, they all demanded payment before you could apply. What is that?! What happened to Obama’s so called grants for women, for moms, and other grants/loans? Were they lies?
Here’s my issue – just got laid off, and I have four kids… and ONE economy car. It’s against the law in my area for four kids to be in the back (not to mention unsafe as the fourth kid has no access to seat belts), and it’s against the law for even the oldest of the kids to sit in the front, so I’m completely out of options. One of these days while I’m driving them to appointments or most likely to school, I’ll be ticketed and/or lose my driving priviledges. Money shouldn’t prevent people from being safe on the road and from following local laws, but it does. I’ve tried looking for jobs so I DON’T have to ask for grants, but since it’s a rural town – which sucks – businesses are ghosting away or being sold. So….
Getting a grant… or getting a ticket/losing your license. There’s no middle ground, unfortunately.
Advice?
Who said I wanted to pay for college? I wanted a vehicle that’s big enough for the family, and by the way… the last van broke down – a crack in the head, rendering it a total loss.
Let’s see… I worked for Pactiv, a Hefty factory. 7.75 an hour for a 12 hour shift with zero benefits. And you tell me I should have saved up enough? LOL. That pay barely broke even with all my bills. Work anywhere? You didn’t even read my post. No one in town is hiring – all the businesses has hiring freezes AND are laying off people. Plus it’s a rural town. You literally can’t find work. It’s all boiling down to beggars begging from beggars at this point.

Applying for federal financial aid (for college) is free and should never cost you. You apply at http://fafsa.ed.gov
Those “Obama grants” you’ve seen advertised are scams. Yes, lies. Obama does not have the authorithy, nor has had enough time in office, to give free money to people. It would never go through anyway… a grant just because someone is a single mother? LOL yeah, not going to happen any more than a grant to someone just because of their skin color.
Anyone wanting money for you to apply for these sort of things are scams. Don’t fall into it.

Those are scams. The only positives to higher education since Obama took office is that the Pell Grant was increased this year and there is a tax credit that you can take. Fill out the fafsa to see if you qualify for the Pell Grant (and state aid) and loans. The tax credit is for up to $ 4,000 of out-of-pocket expenses; however, the site states that you must complete 100 hours of community service to get this credit. In addition, if you’re unemployed through no fault of your own, and you’re not already in college, check into the WIA grant (google WIA and your state’s name for information).
Apply at nursing homes and group homes for individuals with disabilities… in most cities, these are high-turnover jobs (they don’t pay well and they’re hard work, but it’s income). You’re correct that you shouldn’t allow your children to ride in your car if they can’t wear a seat belt. Why didn’t you have a bigger vehicle prior to losing your job? You need to work anywhere and save all you can to purchase a used vehicle that’s big enough for your family before you worry about paying for college.

where do you live, I live in Indiana and they have an agency that helps moms out with a car. In fact people donate there cars to this company. Check and see if you state does that. Also if you are getting state assistance ask you case worker, I used to be in almost the same boat in MI and they let me look for a car that was a certain price, I believe it was $ 1700 and paid for it. I got a Plymouth caravan. I with the best of luck to ya.

How to pay for law school…? ?Like many other students, I’m really taken aback by tuition rates in the U.S. Even for undergrad, I had difficulty financing my education. Now, I’ve been accepted into a top ten law school but the tuition is about 50,000 a year, before expenses, though I’m in-state. Does anyone know of any grants or resources I could look into? For background info, my family income is about 40,000, I’m an African American woman and I have a sister in college. Not to sound too desperate but HELP! Thanks for your time and, please, not rude or racist remarks please…you’d be surprised how often the latter happens.

Talk to financial aid office at the school. They should have a list of resources. If nothing else, look at student loans.
